Extra Eye - First Article Inspection System

1. Why ExtraEye?

First article inspection (FAI) in the PCB assembly process is one of the most important steps - every mistake from the assembly machine setup multiplies into hundreds of incorrectly assembled PCBs if left unchecked. Therefore, it is extremely important to accomplish first article inspection with maximum accuracy.

On the other hand, assembly line downtime during the FAI procedure is very expensive. So, you can't waste time programming an AOI system, even though you have one. Manually checking FAI by cross referencing between BOM and assembly drawing is open to error and is very time consuming.

2. What is ExtraEye?

 Unlike AOI, the Extra Eye is very quick and easy to use. Importing standard data takes around 5 minutes.

This second generation Camera based X-Series has Auto Compare Features which use the FA Inspected PCB as a Golden Board in order to inspect the rest of the batch; 30 seconds for 1500 components.

Extra Eye is a hardware/software system designed to assist any level of Operator in the FAI process.  The hardware incorporates a moving camera on an X-Y axis system and is capable with component sizing down to 1005 outlines.

By presenting an image of the placed component with the related details from the BOM and assembly drawing, the ExtraEye boosts inspection speed, reduces fatigue of personnel and as a result, ensures 100% inspection accuracy.

3. Working in around 5 minutes!

Validating a manufactured PCB is easy and straightforward:

  • Load the co-ordinate file (text format preferred but any format will convert)
  • Load BOM file ( text format preferred but any format will convert )
  • Load drawing (PDF preferred but not essential).
  • Scan the PCB m- Camera system is now 4 times faster than a standard scanner
  • Calibrate x-y co-ordinates to BOM
  • Calibrate BOM to drawing

This show

  • BOM data;
  • Drawing reference;
  • Magnified view of the component;
  • Location on the circuit board.
To this you can now add Library image for automatic comparison option.

Filter and sort the list in the order you require.  Each device is presented in a separate window with its corresponding assembly drawing conveniently showing below and all its BOM details above.

From here let the program navigate you through all the devices.

  • Click 'Valid' for okay;
  • Click 'Invalid' if there is something wrong - There are options then to identify the problem i.e. 'missing'; 'wrong value' etc;
  • Click 'Unsure' if there is something questionable that need to be checked out.
  •  View report showing all invalid devices on top of the assembly drawing.

On completion of the first pass print or e-mail full report to the rework or correction area, a typical report is shown below.
